BR Metals

About the Company:

BR Metals specialises in the recycling of scraps and secondary materials containing Platinum Group Metals (PGM) like Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium as well as other precious metals. Our forte is in the processing and recycling of discarded catalytic converters, an emission control device in gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles. From these end-of-life devices, we recover an estimated 80,000oz.t of PGM and reintroduce them into the supply chain annually, thereby creating a circular economy and fulfilling the high demand for these finite precious resources in a sustainable way while reducing the detrimental impacts of PGM mining on the environment and communities. Our recycling volume made us an integral part of the global supply chain for Rhodium, Platinum and Palladium.

Since 2022, we have been developing our gold and silver recovery capabilities for different industry sectors and waste streams. Although we are still working on a more ecological sound recovery method for precious metals from solutions to plated scraps, we are making headway with new fire assay capability and respectable recovery rates for an expanding range of waste streams and scraps. As with PGM recycling, we strive towards reducing the potentially destructive impact of mining activities by recovering gold and silver from recycled scrap sources, and bring a new lease of life to these finite resources that was otherwise discarded.

Currently, we run 3 bulk semi-automated sampling lines in Singapore, China and Malaysia using patented components that saves energy consumption by over 60%. The facility in Penjuru Place is ISO 14001:2015 certified with zero discharge and zero landfill. We also have two full analysis laboratories in Singapore and Guangdong and a representative office in Thailand.

Our Guangzhou sales office, laboratory and Shaoguan facility as well as representative office in Cambodia have a combined workforce of 37. Our new processing facility in Shaoguan can process 3,000 tons/year of spent auto catalysts and meets all stringent environmental regulations by the PRC government.

Sustainability is at the very heart of our business. To understand why, let’s take a look at the environmental impacts of precious metals mining.

The mining of these ores traditionally occurs through conventional underground or open cut mines, which has extremely detrimental environmental and social impacts. As demand for these valuable metals increases, mining firms are incentivised to exploit more mining sites. For example, communities living on land that contains PGM ores are pushed out of their homes and many struggle to survive. Illegal mining of gold not only endangers lives, it also causes irreversible damage to the environment, which in turn affects the livelihood of the entire community. It’s a vicious cycle. One that we are keen to stop.

Mining activities also causes dangerous pollution. Highly toxic acid from mines and chemical agents used in the mining process are carried through surface drainage and groundwater and deposited in streams and lakes, polluting local water sources. Furthermore, precious metals like gold and PGM are a non-renewable resource, so the mining as a commercial activity itself is unsustainable and at times, exploitative.

As the environmental and social impacts of the traditional take-make-dispose economy become increasingly evident, the urgency and call to explore ways to recycle and reuse and restore is getting louder. BR Metals strives to spearhead the quest to radically transform and shift towards circular designs by offering a viable alternative to precious metal mining and to build a company that operates sustainably and gives back to the environment and society. We ensure our approach to sustainable PGM supply is in line with the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set out by the United Nation to end poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, and achieve peace and justice.

We want to be at the forefront of responsible consumption and production. Traditionally, precious metals mining operates in a linear economy, where they are mined, transformed into products and then disposed of as waste at their end-of-life. This is especially true for PGM, which have a wide range of industrial usage. BR Metals reimagines the PGM industry, by recovering PGM from end-of-life metal scraps and reintroducing them into the supply chain, thereby creating a circular economy. This allows it to meet the high demand for PGM in a sustainable way and at the same time reduces the detrimental impacts of PGM mining on the environment and communities. We hope to do the same for gold and silver.

In addition to our steadfast commitment to conduct our business in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable manner, we firmly believe in the transformative power of education to improve lives and turn communities into sustainable, productive and profitable places with improved living standards. Hence, our social initiatives are focused on providing or sponsoring education opportunities to make a positive difference to our community.

These include the BR Metals Scholarship for the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemical Engineering at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Singapore’s first university of applied learning. We have chosen to establish the scholarship with SIT because we are convinced that applied learning empowers students to better meet the challenges of the real world with the requisite skills and mindset to get ahead. Since 2021, we have provided 3 scholarships to high performing students from disadvantaged background.

We also worked with the Singapore Management University to offer the BR Metals scholarship for full-time undergraduates at with the aim of motivating outstanding undergraduates to select Sustainability offered by the SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business as a second major. Through this scholarship, we help to inspire the next generation of business leaders who will take sustainability to a whole new level.

BR Metals also partners with Singapore-based AZK Business Consultants and the Phongsavanh Foundation to bring free quality education in a safe and friendly learning environment to the underprivileged children of Longxan District in rural Laos. The Keosamy Primary School opened in August 2021 and just in time for the new school semester.

BR Metals Guangzhou regularly donates books and journals about current environmental issues, urban mining and conservation to schools and public libraries. We are hopeful our book donations will raise awareness and inspire actions to save our planet for future generations.

Since 2022, we have been contributing to Bukit Gombak GRC's annual Lunar New Year event for senior residents in the constituency as a gesture of our gratitiude to the pioneer and Merdeka generations who had helped build our nation. To date, we've donated SDG80,000 for the annual event.

About

The Director:

A former business consultant, Frank felt unfulfilled in his corporate career and yearned for a greater sense of purpose. Call it fate, call it luck; a trip to Jinchuan, China, introduced him to the PGM mining industry. Where others saw trash, Frank perceived a sustainable business opportunity in the extraction and recycling of precious metals from discarded catalytic converters.

With just his savings, some loans from family and friends and a pocket full of conviction, Frank sought to disrupt the PGM mining industry and started the first PGM recycling facility in Guangzhou, China. There, PGM such as Rhodium, Platinum and Palladium were extracted from spent catalytic converters and resold to metal refineries, offering a sustainable alternative to PGM mining. From the onset, Frank was driven by a strong conviction to make precious metals recycling a viable alternative to often-destructive deep earth mining that had blighted local communities, and build a company hat operates sustainably and gives back to the environment and society.

Under Frank's leadership, the company's rank and file set out to achieve this by abiding by the strictest international environmental standards and attaining ISO 14001:2015 for both our Singapore and Guangzhou operations. Even though environmental compliance has led to higher operating costs and hampered our competitiveness, especially in the Chinese market, BR Metals managed to secure a sizable market share in China.

In addition to ensuring that BR Metals’ approach to sustainable PGM supply is in line with the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set out by the United Nation to end poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, Frank also wanted to “democratise’ the business and bring the same level of services, know-how and customer care offered by big-name refineries and international recyclers to the often neglected smaller suppliers. In turn, our customers recycle more scraps, which are diverted from the landfills. We take care of our customers and the environment at the same time.

Moving forward, Frank is determined to set higher industry standards as a trusted partner that provide transparency, responsive services and create sustainable value for our customers. Regardless of service diversifications, we are committed to positively contributing to their growth based on flexible arrangements, value-add services and customised recycling solutions that meet their specific needs.
