About the Company:

Single-Champion-Brands-For-Good-2019.png

Food Playground is a multiple award-winning cooking school offering in-person cooking classes and corporate team building workshops since 2012. We operate out of a pre-war heritage shophouse in the heart of Singapore's Chinatown, and have a unique social mission of providing flexi-work employment opportunities for stay-at-home mothers and active seniors who have limited avenues to return to the workforce. Being a social enterprise, we empower these women through structured training in facilitation and public speaking to develop them into confident culinary instructors and event facilitators.

During the Covid-19 circuit breaker period in 2020, Food Playground successfully pivoted and went fully digital to offer virtual cooking classes as well as team-building workshops to keep the business afloat. This was a big technological breakthrough for the group of stay-at-home mothers and active seniors as they had to navigate the steep learning curve within a very short span of time. This move did not go unnoticed as Food Playground had the opportunity to share its digital transformation journey on national media The Business Times, CNA938 and MoneyFM89.3.

Food Playground is consistently ranked the #1 Cooking Class/Workshop in Singapore on Tripadvisor, and is recommended in popular food/travel guides like Lonely Planet, Insight Guides, Best in Singapore and Singapore Tourism Board official website. Our flagship Cultural Cooking Class programme is the recipient of the 'Best Learning & Travel Experience' at the 2013 Singapore Tourism Awards and global winner for 'Best Use of Food/Beverage to Promote Cross-Cultural Understanding' at the 2018 Food Trekking Awards by World Food Travel Association. Our commitment to go the extra mile for our customers has also been publicly recognized when we were awarded the prestigious 'Singapore Service Excellence Medallion' in 2015. Our dedication to employee well-being is also the main reason why Food Playground was awarded GOLD for Excellence in Work-Life Balance at the 2017 HR Excellence Awards.

About the

Founder - Daniel Tan

Daniel is passionate about creating social impact and championing the underdogs. He left his corporate career in the travel & hospitality industry to found social enterprise Food Playground in 2012, and now spends most of his time cooking up new recipes and team-building event ideas in his kitchen.

Through Food Playground, Daniel has inspired many stay-at-home mothers and active seniors to return to the workforce by providing them with flexi-work arrangements and opportunities to regain their confidence and discover their hidden talents. The unfortunate reality is that many stay-at-home mothers and active seniors face overwhelming obstacles in finding meaningful work because of their full-time caregiving duties and need for flexi-work arrangements. Daniel firmly believes that this group of women has so much to offer and contribute, which is why every single employee in Food Playground is either a stay-at-home mother or an active senior.

Against all odds, Food Playground's cultural cooking classes and team-building workshops have won numerous industry accolades and are consistently rated Number 1 on Tripadvisor. Even during the Covid pandemic period, when many cooking schools found it no longer viable to operate, Food Playground was able to pivot to go fully digital, offering innovative virtual cooking classes and team-building workshops to keep its business afloat and retain all its employees. Daniel was also able to inspire his team to do charity bakes to thank frontline healthcare workers, and run free workshops to help empower and train more women to start their home-based businesses.

Nothing gives Daniel more happiness and pride than to see his team of stay-at-home mothers and active seniors overcome overwhelming odds and setbacks time and time again to put their talents to good use and become a force for good.
