Social Enterprise Beginnings


· Spic & Span is a social enterprise that specialises in cleaning technology and provides employment for beneficiaries.

· In 2017, the company started as a housekeeping and cleaning service.

· Focused on inclusive hiring, the company has been partnering Social Service Agencies to provide good jobs to marginalized Singaporeans including ex-offenders, persons with disabilities and persons with mental health backgrounds.

· More than 60 Social Service Agencies have joined the partnership and more than 300 individuals have been trained, upskilled and provided employment opportunities to.

· In 2019, the company clinched the Asia-Pacific Social Innovation Award and was President’s Challenge Social Enterprise of the Year Finalist. For 3 years running, the company has also been awarded the Champions of Good award by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre.


Business Transformation Journey


· As an innovation driven start-up, the company adopted new technology through Job Redesign (JR) solutions such as glass cleaning robots vacuum robots, handheld mobile vacuums to help make jobs easier, safer and smarter for older workers and for workers with disabilities. Cloud software was also adopted to allow the company to be more agile in its manpower deployment.

· The company’s workers were able to take on value-added tasks and the company’s productivity improved by 60%.

· In 2019, the company was accredited under the National Environment Agency (NEA) Enhanced Clean Mark Scheme. The company was also featured by Channel News Asia’s Business Blueprints, NTUC’s LabourBeat and MOM’s Lean Enterprise Development (LED) Symposium.


From Tech Adoption to Tech Creation


· In 2019, the company had a Cleantech R&D breakthrough on its proprietary durable coating.

· This invention, Speco (short for Special Coating) is Made in Singapore and it achieves a 6 Log reduction (99.9999% kill) on microbes including the MRSA Super Bug.

· The company started its workforce transition towards a Cleantech company, upskilling its workers towards a Specialist career path. New application technologies and systems for Quality Assurance and Quality Control were also adopted.

· Speco is a Patent Pending IP (Intellectual Property) of the company. In 2020, the company was internationally accredited as a B corporation, an ISO standard for green and sustainable companies. The company was also awarded the Intellectual Property of Singapore Award 2020 in the Innovation for Humanity category.

· Speco is now being used against the pandemic and has been used by more than 200 organizations across Singapore.

· During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company provided SGD$250,000 of pro bono and heavily subsidised Speco services to the elderly homes and struggling SMEs

· As part of the Speco product range, Speco-24, a durable hand sanitizer, is packed in partnership with the Association of Persons with Special Needs (APSN), and distributed in partnership with local social enterprises.

The company is now focused on creating more tech for good to create new jobs.

Mr Benjamin Chua is the Founder of Spic & Span, a commercial cleaning and cleaning technology social enterprise.

Spic & Span has developed a proprietary technology Speco that provide 6 months antimicrobial protection on surfaces. Speco is now widely used across Singapore to combat COVID-19.

In 2019, Spic & Span was the President's Challenge Social Enterprise of the Year Finalist. The company also clinched the Asia Pacific Social Innovation Award by the Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 2017 and 2018, he led the team to be awarded the Champions of Good award by NVPC for providing good jobs to marginalized Singaporeans.

Spic & Span has partnered with more than 60 Social Service Agencies tackling social causes and have trained more than 300 individuals ranging from ex-offenders, the homeless and persons with disabilities by offering sustainable and progressive jobs.

Before entering the private sector, he served as a Senior Manager under a statutory board of the Ministry of National Development, overseeing estate agency policies and regulations.

As a non-profit leader, in 2015 he served on the AVA's Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration Committee (MSCC), championing animal welfare and developing a national accreditation program for the pet industry.

Mr Chua had also actively contributed to the community for more than a decade, taking on steering roles such as the Chairman of the Yew Tee CC YEC and was also part of the PAYM Central Youth Council, the decision making body of all 102 YECs in Singapore. In 2016, his team had clinched the Top 10 YEC Awards. In 2018, he received the Meritorious Youth Award.

In 2009 and 2010, Benjamin was awarded the SPF Commissioner of Police Commendation twice for outstanding work. In 2012, he was also awarded the Minister's Award (MND) for work excellence.

In 2015, he was also appointed as Singapore's Youngest Mediator by the Ministry of Law. In 2018, he was featured by the Community Mediation Centre on Straits Times.

Academically, he received a BSc in Business Admin from State University of New York (2008) and a Master degree in International Political Economy from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University (2013).

As a driver for social change, he attended Harvard Business School under the Social Enterprise Initiative in 2019. He was also appointed to the Singapore Business Federation core committee of the Sustainable Employment Project to work on a report tackling inequality in Singapore.
